Description

In Episode 211 of the Transition Drill Podcast, Retired Master Sergeant Eric Franklin’s journey through 23 years in the Marine Corps is a powerful story of resilience, leadership, and passion. From his early years growing up across Minnesota, Mississippi, and Florida, Eric’s life was shaped by constant change, personal challenges, and a love for the ocean that would define his future.

After enlisting in 1993, Eric quickly discovered that the Marine Corps would test him in ways he never expected. Boot camp taught him discipline, leadership, and the importance of teamwork. Over the years, he transitioned from a young radio repairman to an influential leader, mentoring Marines and building trust within his teams.

As a radio repairman and radioman, he earned a spot with First Force Reconnaissance Company, where he deployed to Iraq. Those years taught him lessons in preparation, performance under pressure, and the power of trust among small, high-functioning teams.

But Eric’s story goes far beyond military achievements. As a passionate surfer, he founded the Pendleton Surf Club, creating a place for active duty and veterans to build camaraderie outside the uniform. Balancing deployments, fatherhood, and leadership, Eric learned firsthand how finding personal outlets helps sustain mental and emotional health during demanding careers.

When the time came to transition, Eric approached retirement with strategy and intent. He prepared early, took advantage of transition resources, and leveraged his experience into a successful civilian contracting role. Today, he continues to mentor veterans, grow the Pendleton Surf Club, and live a life rooted in purpose and community.

If you are a veteran, first responder, or transitioning professional, Eric’s story delivers actionable advice on building resilience, finding your tribe, and preparing for life after service.
